We start off from the parking lot and head for the hills to the north of White Pocket in search of the Native American petroglyphs and artifacts we have heard were in this vicinity. In my 5 previous trips here, I have never seen these. Slade, who is part mountain goat, next appeared on this stone spire.
Zooming in some....
There's Little Joe starting his climb up - he's in the red shirt to the right and below the center of the picture.
Bob (yellow hat) and Joe (red hat) follow the bottom of the steep cliffs.
Bob and Joe decide to take the middle height route. I'll hang low and follow the base.
Bob can't resist the wave-like sandstone formations and shoots a picture
Don can't resist either.
Don continues working along the base.
Bob appears.
A pile of ????? Pancakes, of course.
Those caves didn't yield any signs of petroglyphs

Another cave along the base.
The last cave. Blind Don couldn't see anything here except some signs of small animal droppings. So he heads south to White Pocket.
Later, when Scott catches up, he asks me if I saw what we were looking for. He said is was right there where I was. So the others and I, went back up there at the end of the day to see them. They're right there on that darker "varnish".
Lots of antelope.
Also, in the cave on a rock, prior visitors had laid out potsherds and old corn cobs that had been found around here, along with some pieces of bone.
Joe and Slade near the cave entrance.
Joe and Little Joe. Little Joe points to the rock that held the potsherds, corn cobs and pieces of bone.
These may be fossilized packrat "middens" - see http://sbsc.wr.usgs.gov/cprs/research/projects/global_change/middens.asp (cut and past this link into your browser to see what they are useful for).
More "middens" in the cave? We didn't explore further.

Looks like some birds have been nesting in the sandstone crevices of the cliff.

There were a few wild flowers out adding bright color to the area.
Ok, We've headed back to the classic area of White Pocket. And the sun and clouds are cooperating late in the day.
There is lots of "brain rock" around.
And sandstone swirls

Bob took this photo of the classical icon for White Pocket

Joe goes up to get a a better view of the area.
Bob and "his other brother, Upside down Bob."
More colorful beauty.
A reclining ? Whatever it is, it's watching us.
Even from the side, it seems to watch us.
And from behind.
Fascinating beauty.
Brain rock again. It's all over.
You guessed it!
Nearing twilight - we're loosing sunlight fast. We had to drive out after dark. That drive was the first time I've used the Xterror's off-road lights. They light up everything. They could probably see us in Kanab.
