IMG 9394-HDR(3) We start off from the parking lot and head for the hills to the north of White Pocket in search of the Native American petroglyphs and artifacts we have heard were in this vicinity. In my 5 previous trips here, I have never seen these. Slade, who is part mountain goat, next appeared on this stone spire. IMG 9397-HDR(3) Zooming in some.... IMG 9400-HDR(3) There's Little Joe starting his climb up - he's in the red shirt to the right and below the center of the picture. IMG 9403-HDR(3) Bob (yellow hat) and Joe (red hat) follow the bottom of the steep cliffs.
IMG 9406-HDR(3) Bob and Joe decide to take the middle height route. I'll hang low and follow the base. DSC 1872-HDR(3) Bob can't resist the wave-like sandstone formations and shoots a picture IMG 9409-HDR(3) Don can't resist either. IMG 9415-HDR(3) Don continues working along the base.
IMG 9418-HDR(3) Bob appears. IMG 9424-HDR(3) A pile of ????? Pancakes, of course. IMG 9427-HDR(3) Those caves didn't yield any signs of petroglyphs IMG 9430-HDR(3)
IMG 9433-HDR(3) IMG 9436-HDR(3) Another cave along the base. IMG 9439-HDR(3) The last cave. Blind Don couldn't see anything here except some signs of small animal droppings. So he heads south to White Pocket. IMG 9538-HDR(3) Later, when Scott catches up, he asks me if I saw what we were looking for. He said is was right there where I was. So the others and I, went back up there at the end of the day to see them. They're right there on that darker "varnish".
IMG 9535-HDR(3) Lots of antelope. IMG 9544-HDR(3) Also, in the cave on a rock, prior visitors had laid out potsherds and old corn cobs that had been found around here, along with some pieces of bone. IMG 9547-HDR(3) Joe and Slade near the cave entrance. IMG 9550-HDR(3) Joe and Little Joe. Little Joe points to the rock that held the potsherds, corn cobs and pieces of bone.
IMG 9551-HDR These may be fossilized packrat "middens" - see http://sbsc.wr.usgs.gov/cprs/research/projects/global_change/middens.asp (cut and past this link into your browser to see what they are useful for). IMG 9552-HDR More "middens" in the cave? We didn't explore further. IMG 9553-HDR IMG 9451-HDR(3) Looks like some birds have been nesting in the sandstone crevices of the cliff.
IMG 9442-HDR(3) IMG 9445-HDR(3) IMG 9452-HDR There were a few wild flowers out adding bright color to the area. IMG 9457-HDR(3) Ok, We've headed back to the classic area of White Pocket. And the sun and clouds are cooperating late in the day.
IMG 9463-HDR(3) There is lots of "brain rock" around. IMG 9466-HDR(3) And sandstone swirls DSC 1914-HDR(3) Bob's photo IMG 9469-HDR(3)
IMG 9475-HDR(3) IMG 9478-HDR(3) DSC 1932-HDR(3) Bob took this photo of the classical icon for White Pocket DSC 1962-HDR(3) Bob's Photo
IMG 9479-HDR Joe goes up to get a a better view of the area. IMG 9490-HDR(3) Bob and "his other brother, Upside down Bob." IMG 9497-HDR More colorful beauty. IMG 9508-HDR(3) A reclining ? Whatever it is, it's watching us.
IMG 9520-HDR(3) Even from the side, it seems to watch us. DSC 1983-HDR(3) And from behind. IMG 9517-HDR(3) Fascinating beauty. IMG 9523-HDR(3) Brain rock again. It's all over.
IMG 9529-HDR(3) You guessed it! IMG 9555-HDR(2) Nearing twilight - we're loosing sunlight fast. We had to drive out after dark. That drive was the first time I've used the Xterror's off-road lights. They light up everything. They could probably see us in Kanab.
